Install on Windows 8

Follow these steps for the Windows 8 operating system. First, choose your connection type.
NOTE: If you are not using the latest version of Windows 8, the information in this document might not match. You can get the latest version from the Microsoft Store.

Connect to a wired (ethernet) network

Follow these steps to install your printer over a wired (Ethernet) network.

Step one: Check the requirements

Make sure you have the following items:
  • One of the following types of wired access points or routers: Ethernet router, switch, hub, or wireless router with Ethernet ports
  • A computer that connects to the wired access point or router
  • A Category 5 Ethernet cable to use for the HP product. (Do not use a standard telephone cable.)
    Figure 1: Cable comparison
    Ethernet cable and telephone cable
    1 - Ethernet cable
2 - Telephone cable (do not use)
Although an Ethernet cable looks similar to standard telephone cable, each has a different plug and a different number of wires. The plug on an Ethernet cable (also called an RJ-45 connector) is wide, thick, and always has eight wires. The plug on a telephone cable is narrower and has between two and six wires.

Step two: Change from a USB connection to an Ethernet connection (optional)

If you previously installed the software for a USB connection and now want to change to an Ethernet connection, follow these instructions to remove the USB installation before continuing.
  1. Right-click the Start button () or the lower left corner of the screen, and then click Search.
  2. Type HP in the search box, and then click the name of your printer when it displays. The printer software opens.
  3. Click Printer Setup & Software Selection.
  4. Click Connect a new printer, and then follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer on your wired network.
  5. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer. Once the printer has been set up on the wired network, there is no need to continue with the steps in this document.

Step three: Connect the printer to the network

  1. Remove any plug or protective cover from the Ethernet port on the back of the product.
    Figure 2: Remove plug
  2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the product, and then connect the other end of the cable to an available port on the wired access point or router.
Figure 3: Connect the Ethernet cable
  3. Connect the power cord to the product, and then plug it into an electrical outlet.
  4. Turn the product on.

Step four: Install the software

When you are ready to begin, follow the instructions for the installation method that you want to use. During the installation, choose the option for the wired network type of connection, not the USB option.
NOTE: As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD instead.
Method one: Download and install the software from the HP website
Follow these steps to download and install the software.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. Go to HP Drivers & Downloads . If prompted, type your printer model number, click Go, and then click Drivers.

  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click Software Update. Software Update checks for available updates.
  2. In the Software Update window, select the software you want to install, and then click Install.
NOTE: Install all available updates for best performance and functionality.
  3. When prompted, enter your administrator account name and password.
  4. After the software updates complete, restart the computer (if required).

Connect to a wireless network

Select an option to install your printer on a wireless network.
  • If you have not already installed your printer, follow the steps in 'Wireless installation'.
  • If you want to change an existing connection type to a wireless network connection, follow the instructions in 'Change an existing USB or wired (Ethernet) connection to a wireless connection'.

Option one: Wireless installation

If you have not previously installed the software, follow these instructions.
Step one: Prepare for installation
  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
    • Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
    • WEP key or WPA security passphrase
    • A computer that is connected to the wireless network.
    • Internet access. HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL.
    • Your wireless-capable HP product. Place it close to the computer during the installation procedure.
    • A USB cable (used only during installation).
    • Administrator privileges or password
  2. Make sure the product, access point, and computer are all on, and that the computer is connecting to the wireless network.
  3. Connect the USB Cable to the rear port of the HP product and to any USB port on the computer.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.
Step two: Connect to the wireless network using the Wireless Setup Wizard
The Wireless Setup Wizard provides an easy way to set up and manage a wireless connection to your printer.
NOTE: To use the Wireless Setup Wizard, you must have a wireless network set up and running.
  1. Set up the printer hardware, if you have not already.
  2. On the printer touch screen, touch the Right Arrow () to display the second navigation screen.
  3. Touch the Setup icon (). The Setup Menu screen displays.
  4. Touch Network, touch Wireless Setup Wizard, and then touch Continue.
  5. Wait while the printer searches for routers that are within range of the printer. The Select Network Name menu displays.
  6. Scroll down the list of network names until you find the name of your network.
  7. Touch the name of your network, and then touch OK.
NOTE: Your network name does not display on the Select Network (SSID) menu if your network settings have SSID broadcasting turned off or if a network problem exists.
  8. If the list does not contain your network name, follow these steps to enter it manually:
    1. On the Select Network (SSID) screen, scroll to and select Enter New Network Name. An on-screen keyboard displays.
    2. Use the on-screen keyboard to enter the network name (SSID).
NOTE: Make sure that you type the uppercase (capital) and lowercase (small) letters exactly. Otherwise, the wireless connection fails.
    3. When you finish entering the new network name, touch OK. The printer searches for that specific SSID.
NOTE: If the SSID is not found after manually typing the network name, contact your network administrator or the person who set up the wireless network to confirm the network’s SSID/network settings. Once the SSID is found, the printer determines if the network has a security key and what type of key it is.
  9. If prompted, enter the WEP or WPA key:
    1. Using the on-screen keyboard, touch the appropriate letters or numbers to enter the key.
NOTE: You must type the exact uppercase (capital) and lowercase (small) letters. Otherwise, the wireless connection fails.
    2. When you finish entering the WEP key or WPA key, touch OK, and then touch OK. The printer attempts to connect to the network.
  10. Wait for the printer to connect to the network, and then continue to the next step.
NOTE: If a connection error message displays, make sure that the network name and security key are correct. Follow the prompts to enter the information again.
Step three: Install the software
Choose one of the following methods to install the printer software.
NOTE: If you partitioned your hard drive, you must install the driver on the same partition as the operating system.
Method one: Download and install the software from the HP website (recommended)
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. Go to HP Drivers & Downloads . If prompted, type your printer model number, click Go, and then click Drivers.
  4. Make sure that your operating system is selected, and then click Next.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver.
  6. Click Download, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Method one: Use Apple Software Updates
Important: To successfully update the HP software and driver, the HP product must be turned on and connected to the Mac with a USB or network connection, or there must be an existing printer queue for your product.

Option two: Change an existing USB or wired (Ethernet) connection to a wireless connection

Follow these steps to change a current connection type to a wireless connection with Bonjour.
NOTE: The printer software or the in-OS driver must be installed to change the connection type with Bonjour.
Step one: Connect to the wireless network
Select a method to connect the printer to a wireless network.
Step two: Add the printer with Bonjour
  1. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences. The System Preferences window opens.
  2. Click Print & Fax.
  3. In the Printers section, click the name of your printer, and then click the Minus Sign () to remove it.
  4. Click the Plus Sign ().
  5. Select your printer from the list of Bonjour devices, and then click Add.
